Tips For Networking With Professionals

Networking events can either be a bust or helpful; it all depends on how you do it. I don’t know about you, but  I hate those stupid conversation starters like  “how about the weather” or “did you see the game last night?” Seriously do I look like I want to talk about the weather? Now shoes we can talk about all day, but I don’t think most men can keep that conversation going for very long. Unfortunately for everyone, when starting in business or gaining industry connections, we all have to network. However, fortunately for you, I will give you some great tips and tricks that will help you get through any networking event successfully.

Have a goal

  • What is the purpose of you going?
  • Who do you want to meet?
  • What are your outcomes?

Dress to impress

  • Most networking events are business casual; however, it is always good to double-check. You don’t want to walk into a bowling alley wearing 6inch stilettos and a pencil skirt.

Bring business cards

  • This is an essential step to any networking event.
  • Bring more than you think you will need. You don’t want to be that person saying, “I just gave out my last one.”
  • Work on your elevator pitch. Be able to introduce yourself, and say what you do in less than 20-30 seconds

Conversation Starters:

  • How did you find out about this networking event?
  • What’s your most favorite part of your job?
  • What drew you into your current industry?
  • What is your favorite outside the office activity?

During Conversation:

  • Keep eye contact with the person/s speaking.
  • Listen then speak
  • Show sincerity and interest in the conversation you are having. Not everyone will be someone to talk to; not to be harsh, but don’t waste your time if you aren’t interested.
  • Take Notes: One trick I learned a few years back was to have a business card notebook. After you meet someone, take a few moments to write down a few key points from the conversation on a sticky note and put it with their business card. If you don’t want to be super obvious, make a note on your phone.

FOLLOW UP, FOLLOW UP, FOLLOW UP! There is nothing worse than meeting someone and never talking to them again. Send a quick email or leave a message thanking them for their time while reminding them of the topics discussed. It’s also great to provide an outside resource they can use based on your conversation. If you want to take it further, invite them for coffee or a drink.
